Chainwork
Chainwork
Chain work is commonly used for hoisting, lifting, securing, or anchoring loads. Due to the large forces and potential risks in case of failure, periodic inspection and certification are legally required. This inspection must comply with the Health and Safety Act, Machinery Directive, and relevant standards such as NEN-EN 818.
Purpose of Inspection:
- Ensure the safety of users and the surrounding environment.
- Detect wear, stretching, deformation, or damage to links, hooks, and connections.
- Comply with legal requirements and reduce liability.
Applications:
- Hoisting chains and chain slings.
- Chain hoists (manual or electric).
- Lashing and tensioning systems.
- Attachment chains (e.g., on trailers or for cargo securing).
Types of Inspections:
- Visual inspection before use (by user): Check for visible damage, cracks, rust, or bends.
- Periodic inspection (mandatory, typically annually): Performed by an expert, with certification provided, and a visible mark on the item to show it’s safe to use.
